Bill Stead never dreamed that he would be the founder of an air race that trumps all others. He simply wanted a thrilling way to celebrate Nevada’s centennial birthday. He wanted speed and sound, aerobatics and action. He didn’t expect to create one of the most popular air shows around. But, 45 years ago, he did.
The National Championship Air Races take place again September 15 – 19 in 2010 at the Reno/Stead Airport. These races are the only place in the world where you can see five days of real air racing by six classes of aircraft. This is a chance to get up close and personal with some of the fastest birds around. The U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds will make their ninth appearance in the National Championship Air Races this year. Watch as the best of the best present precision aerial maneuvers that demonstrate the capabilities of modern, high-performance aircraft and the high degree of professional skill required to operate them. And the synchronized showmanship of the Thunderbirds, along with the tech-laden force of the F-22 Raptor Demonstration Team, represent just the tip of the excitement at the air races.
In addition to the flying excitement, visitors can explore the pits and watch race teams work on their aircraft, collect some aviation swag from a variety of vendors and enjoy an array of food and beverages. For more information, visit airrace.org. |
