The largest alpine lake in the world, Lake Tahoe is one of America’s treasures. Mark Twain called Lake Tahoe “the fairest picture the whole earth affords.” The eighth deepest lake in the world and second deepest in the U.S., Lake Tahoe has an average depth of 980 feet with its deepest point being 1,645 feet. It holds approximately 10 trillion gallons, enough to cover California to a depth of 14.5 inches. Highlights include Zephyr Cove and Sand Harbor State Park, which has beautiful beaches and hosts the Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival in late summer. Lake Tahoe also offers many recreational and entertainment opportunities, including skiing in winter, golf and water sports in summer and exciting nightlife at its state line casino resorts. Lake Tahoe is 32 miles southwest of Reno/Sparks on the Nevada/California state line.

Gatekeeper’s Museum

The Gatekeeper’s Museum features exhibits about the cultural history of the Tahoe Basin. The museum hosts the Marion Steinbach Indian Basket collection which includes over 800 utilitarian and gift baskets from 85 Native American tribes. Located lakeside in William B. Layton Park-a great site for your wedding or special event!! Open May-Oct; Daily 10am-5pm, weather permitting-call in advance if severe weather is predicted.

Tahoe Maritime Museum

Tahoe Maritime Museum in Homewood is in a new 5,800 square foot facility with an interactive exhibit, children’s visiting area and community gathering area. The museum, reminiscent of an old boathouse, showcases the history of boating in Lake Tahoe. Several historical watercraft, including the Shanghai, an 1890s excursion, and Redskin, a rare 1912 Canadian-built displacement boat, are on display.

The UC Davis Thomas J. Long Foundation Education Center provides visitors insight into why Lake Tahoe is unique and how science and research are used to restore and protect Lake Tahoe for future generations. The only Lake Tahoe science center includes a research vessel, virtual laboratory and 3-D visualization lab exhibits and is located inside the Tahoe Center for Environmental Sciences. We offer guided tours and lively demonstrations for adults and families with kids ages 8 and up. For people trying to build greener homes and workplaces, there are working examples of sustainable design, construction and landscaping as part of our green building tours.

Fallen Leaf Lake is the largest of three glacially carved valleys pouring out of Desolation Wilderness into Tahoe’s southwest shore. Surrounded by the flanks of Mt. Tallac on the west and Angora Ridge on the east Fallen Leaf Lake offers camping, hiking, beach, swimming, sailing, canoes, motor boats, cabins, cliffs, fishing and a general store.

Lake Tahoe Rim Trail

One of the world’s premier trails, the Tahoe Rim Trail is 165
miles of a single-track multi-use trail. The trail is open to bikers, hikers and equestrians. The trail passes through California and Nevada, six counties, one state park, three national forests and three natural wilderness areas. Visit the website for trail heads and maps.

Logan Shoals Vista Point

The Logan Shoals Vista Point is off US Highway 50 and on the north side of Cave Rock. Roadside signs make this popular viewing area easy to find. Expect to see breathtaking views across the lake and you can see Emerald Bay. Many people come here to picnic, or simply to capture the views on their camera.
